QUESTION: How do you recommend I deal with the thought that "I have
started to late to achieve a single figure handicap" which I would like very
much to do.  Thank you for your time.

ANSWER: What I recommend about your thought depends on if your thought about your handicap is interfering with your ability to appreciate the game and your own abilities. Typically with this type of thought one tends to feel a sense of disappointment and loss and all of those uncomfortable feelings arise.

Definitely these type thought processes are self-sabotaging in nature. My recommendation is to truly appreciate the nature of the game and your performance presently! ENJOY the JOURNEY at least a “good enough” percentage of time. 

QUESTION: How does one keep "mechanical" thoughts out of one's mind when actually playing golf (as opposed to practicing) -- especially when one is working on a specific mechanical move?

ANSWER: It is expected that if you are “working on one particular move” whether playing or practicing, the “mechanical” thoughts will be in your conscious mind. Let’s assume that you believe thinking of mechanical thoughts may be disturbing to your shot performance. On this basis alone there is increased probability of a poor shot. 

Practicing at the range or on the course is your choice. Ultimately you will trust your unconscious mind to know the mechanical technique so that you can focus on the accuracy of the shot and trust your body to perform as practiced. Remember learning to ride a bicycle or drive a car? 

QUESTION: I know I can play this game. I know the feeling of sweet shots. I would like to know how I could develop confidence and consistency to upping the level of my game? Can you help?

ANSWER: The evolving solution is to feel confident and be consistent. Be consistent in your thoughts being your ally, and understand the nature of your emotions in relation to mastering the mind game for peak performance. Mind body balance must be finely tuned, to acutely focus with the mind, and possess a calm intense positive feeling, on each individual shot for optimum success. 

Confidence will build with success from these interventions. Consistency will build with confidence. QUESTION: How can I control my anger when I make a bad shot?

ANSWER: I wonder what it means to you not to be able to control your anger after hitting a “bad shot.” Do you control your anger in other activities not involved with golf? How does this non-controllable anger assist you as you continue playing the game? When you are angry what do you talk to yourself about in your mind? I wonder what you were thinking while planning and implementing this shot? What were your expectations? 

Are you suffering the loss of the way you expected the shot to be executed after keenly assessing the situation and feeling and thinking positively while implementing the shot? It would be appropriate to have feelings of anger in relation to loss; i.e., the loss of the way you had planned the shot to land. Appropriate anger is functional. It is also functional, logical and practical to work through and let go of the anger connected to your mind and body.

The real question is just how much enjoyment do you want to have on the golf course and how can you be in that process? Anger is an emotion. Your ability to work with your emotions in a healthy mode is limitless. Enjoy the possibilities!

QUESTION:  I have a general question regarding the mental aspects of golf. My golf game has two very opposite trends, controlled or concise or all over the course like miss hitting simple chip shots. I try not to dwell on the bad rounds but feel they chip away at my confidence in future rounds. Can you comment?

ANSWER: Confidence is a common question with regard to the mind game as you can read from other questions. With your specific question in mind, I wonder why it is that you focus on the bad shots in your next round instead of the good shots?

A shot miss hit is a way of challenging both your mind and physical game of golf. Utilize the challenge of the mind game in golf to learn strategies to optimize your potential. It is important to focus on positive feelings and experiences from the past and build a bridge from these to future shots. Anything in your mind that might disallow maximizing your potential on the links should be a cue of interference and the need to let them go. 

Most importantly, remember golf is like life, an evolving process of learning how to master the mind game and maximize your potential. The ecstasy of playing well comes from understanding the agony of not. So when you’re not playing as well as you like, cough it up to one more learning experience on your road to success. Learning hypnotic techniques is an effective way to increase your chances of hitting your best because it connects to programming at conscious and unconscious processes of the mind. QUESTION: Can a junior golf player, 13 years have a program of mental training?

ANSWER: It is interesting that you should ask that question. My son just turned 13 and recently joined Junior Golf. Today for the first time he listened to my CD. I have discussed and will continue to converse with him about the mind game of golf and life. The mind game is an evolving life process, from infancy till death. The younger one learns about the humanness of emotions and how to effectively deal with them, the psychologically healthier  the individual will progress through life. What a gift!

QUESTION: When I am in competition and I mess up a hole, not only I am frustrated but also I start feeling pressure on the next hole to compensate for the mistake. (San Diego, CA: 27 Y/O male, Buy.Com Tour) 

ANSWER: The answer most often cited by sports psychologists is to learn to focus only on the shot you are currently hitting. That is very good advice. The difficulty is that there are several levels of thinking that must take place before you can Focus on the Next SHOT.

                     First, you must understand that hitting a shot to your dislike is a Loss. A personal loss of the way you PLANNED to execute the shot. A Loss of the Way You Thought and Hoped That Shot Would GO. When you realize it as a loss, then you understand the involvement of emotions like anger and sadness and thoughts of "if only" I had aimed the shot a little more left. Secondly, you must effectively cope with these emotions. Thirdly, letting them go, so you can FOCUS ON THE NEXT GRAND SHOT.

QUESTION: Hello Dr Silbert, I am writing you because a friend of mine told me about your hypnosis golf tape. What I am more interested in is a way to hypnotize my self out of the "yips". Do you know what they are? I am a pretty good golfer, (I've had a 1 hdcp), but with the putter I have been incredibly bad. I could miss from 10 inches.....I have involuntary movements with my hands.... Maybe you know what I mean? My friend told me your a low hdcp, so you know golf. Have you ever dealt with the yips? They're a very serious problem. Please let me know if you have made a cd for my problem. Thanks, 

ANSWER: Yes, I understand what the yips are. I just love, particularly in a tournament, how a short putt becomes more difficult than a long one. Yes, I can help you with the yips.                     Most importantly talk to yourself about how you do have the confidence to make the putt. Take time out of your day, a few minutes here and there, three or four times a day, and simply close your eyes and imagine that you are the most successful putter. Take a long slow deep breath and feel your nostrils flare as you see and feel the movements of a perfect swing. The mind and body working in sync to feel the balance of your stance on the grass on  the green. And, of course, hearing the ball drop into the cup. Success. CONTINUED QUESTION: Dr. Silbert,Thanks for your response. I live in the Midwest. This morning I made an appointment with a psychologist at a local clinic. I have tried hypnosis before and I have decided to try again, but with someone who focuses on sports performance. What I have is known in the archery circles as "target panic" and it is responsible for ending the careers of many very fine tournament archers,if I were not so stubborn I would probably be among them.
